The 23-year-old sustained the injury during the recently concluded IPL season while playing against Gujarat Titans on May 16, when he was forced off the field after bowling just eight deliveries. Following the setback, he has now undergone a successful surgical procedure and has begun his rehabilitation process.

According to a statement shared by his management, Pathirana underwent a left biceps femoris open surgical hamstring repair and has started recovery in France. The process was made possible through coordinated support from Sri Lanka Cricket and Kolkata Knight Riders, who backed his treatment and recovery plan.

“Matheesha Pathirana has successfully undergone a left biceps femoris open surgical hamstring repair and has now begun the road to recovery in France… He will work hard, stay focused and be back doing what he loves soon,” his manager said in a social media post.

Pathirana had been one of the high-profile signings ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, but his campaign was disrupted by fitness concerns even before the season fully began. He had earlier struggled with a calf injury during the T20 World Cup, which delayed his arrival and impacted his availability.

His latest setback also ruled him out of Sri Lanka’s recent all-format tour of the West Indies, where the team endured mixed results across formats.

The right-arm pacer will now focus on rehabilitation with hopes of returning stronger to competitive cricket in the coming months.
