Kolkata Knight Riders, currently at the bottom of the points table with just one point from four matches, have received a significant lift with the availability of Pathirana for the remainder of IPL 2026.
According to reports, the Sri Lankan pacer has been granted his No Objection Certificate (NOC) and is set to travel to Chennai to link up with the squad ahead of their upcoming fixtures. His arrival comes at a crucial time as KKR have struggled badly in the death overs this season.
Defeats against Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants exposed their inability to contain opposition batters in the closing stages, highlighting a major weakness in their bowling attack.
KKR had invested heavily in Pathirana, signing him for a record INR 18 crore at the auction, underlining his importance to their long-term plans. However, his availability had been uncertain after a left-leg injury sustained during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, where he was forced off after bowling just four deliveries against Australia.
Previously representing Chennai Super Kings, Pathirana has taken 47 wickets in 32 matches and played a key role in their 2023 title-winning season. Known for his slingy action and lethal death bowling, he is expected to strengthen a KKR attack that has lacked consistency due to injuries and poor form.
KKR’s issues have not been limited to bowling, with captain Ajinkya Rahane facing criticism for unsettled batting combinations and frequent changes. Big-money signing Cameron Green has also struggled to make an impact so far, while youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi has been one of the few positives in a disappointing start.
KKR will next face CSK in Chennai, where spin-friendly conditions are expected to play a key role. With their campaign already under pressure, Pathirana’s return could prove vital in turning their season around.
