Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Preview:
Sri Lanka( SL ) is set to face Bangladesh( BAN ) in their 1st ODI match during the Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka, 2025. This match is scheduled to take place at the R.Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday, July 2.
Sri Lanka will open with Pathum Nissanka and Nishan Madushka. While Nissanka averages a healthy 41 in ODIs and has a double century to his name, his recent form in the format has been patchy—he’s been dismissed in single digits in four of his last five innings. However, Bangladesh will still be wary, as he was in red-hot form in the Test series, racking up 369 runs with scores of 187 and 158.
Madushka, on the other hand, has made a solid start to his ODI career, scoring 158 runs in just three innings, including two fifties. At number three, Kusal Mendis will be a key figure. He was the top scorer in Sri Lanka’s last ODI with a century and has amassed 454 runs in his last nine ODIs at an average of 64—making him one to watch.
The middle order will feature Kamindu Mendis, captain Charith Asalanka, and Janith Liyanage. Kamindu has an impressive Test average of 62 but hasn’t quite found his feet in ODIs yet, averaging just 27 with the bat and taking only 2 wickets in 19 matches. Asalanka, in contrast, has been in great form. He’s scored 337 runs in his last 10 ODIs at an average of 47 and averages 65 against Bangladesh, including a century and two fifties in six innings. He also starred against Australia with 205 runs in just two games. Liyanage brings stability lower down the order, averaging 44 at number six.
Sri Lanka is likely to go with a spin-heavy attack, featuring Maheesh Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Dunith Wellalage. Theekshana has been effective with 19 wickets in his last nine ODIs and a tight economy of 4.41. The pace duties will likely fall to Asitha Fernando, who has 15 wickets in his last nine ODIs, and IPL star Eshan Malinga, who impressed with 13 wickets in seven games for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, have made five changes to their ODI squad. With Mahmudullah retiring from international cricket and Mushfiqur Rahim stepping away from Tests, Litton Das returns to the squad for the three-match series. Das had a disappointing 2023, scoring just 35 runs in eight games, and his record against Sri Lanka isn’t great either—only 63 runs in nine matches.
Tanzid Hasan will open the batting alongside Najmul Hossain Shanto. Tanzid has scored 283 runs in his last nine ODIs at an average of 31 and hit a career-best 84 in Bangladesh’s last win over Sri Lanka. Shanto, fresh off a strong Test series where he scored 300 runs in two matches with two centuries, will look to carry that form into the ODIs. He has a terrific record against Sri Lanka—345 runs in five innings at an average of 85—and will be key to Bangladesh’s batting effort.
Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz will likely bat at number three. While he’s scored 323 runs in his last 10 ODIs, his record against Sri Lanka is modest—averaging just 15 with the bat in 13 games. However, with the ball, he’s been more effective, taking 21 wickets against the Lankans. He’ll be joined in the middle order by Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali. Interestingly, Jaker is the only batter in the squad with an average above 50 in ODIs—264 runs in seven matches.
In the bowling department, Taskin Ahmed will lead the pace attack alongside Mustafizur Rahman, with support from Miraz and leg-spinner Rishad Hossain. Taskin has picked up 13 wickets in his last eight ODIs, while Mustafizur has taken 12 in his last six. The latter has been especially dangerous against Sri Lanka, with 23 wickets in 14 ODIs—13 of those on Sri Lankan soil—making him the bowler to watch.

SL vs BAN Pitch Report:
The surface at R. Premadasa Stadium usually offers something for everyone. Traditionally, it’s been known as a slower track that tends to assist spinners as the game progresses, especially in the second innings. Batters will need to apply themselves early on, as the new ball can grip a bit and stroke-making isn’t always easy up front.
As the match wears on, expect turn and variable bounce, which makes batting second a tricky proposition, particularly in day-night games where dew may or may not come into play.
That said, in recent years, there have been some high-scoring encounters, especially when the pitch is flat and well-rolled. Teams winning the toss often prefer to bat first, looking to post a competitive total and let the spinners take charge in the second innings.
Overall: A batting-friendly surface early on with increasing help for spinners; 260–280 can be a good score in ODIs, while anything above 160 in T20s is competitive.
