Afghanistan vs West Indies Preview:

Afghanistan( AFG ) is set to face West Indies( WI ) in their 2nd T20I match during the New Zealand tour of India, 2026. This match is scheduled to take place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, January 21.

Afghanistan began their World Cup preparations in impressive fashion, dominating the West Indies by 38 runs in the first T20I on Monday. After losing Rahmanullah Gurbaz on the opening delivery and Sediqullah Atal for just two in the third over, Afghanistan found themselves struggling at 19/2. What followed, however, was a stunning recovery.

Ibrahim Zadran and Darwish Rasooli produced a brilliant partnership, adding 162 runs for the third wicket—the highest third-wicket stand in T20Is at Dubai. Zadran finished with a superb 87 off 56 balls, while Rasooli supported him with a powerful 84 off 59, getting out on the final ball of the innings.

Afghanistan then bowled out the West Indies for 143/9. Zia-ur-Rahman was the standout bowler with figures of 3/36, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman struck early in the powerplay. Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad also contributed with two wickets each. With three of the world’s top spinners in their ranks, Afghanistan look well-equipped for the upcoming World Cup. Their only concerns remain Gurbaz’s form and whether the middle order gets enough match practice.

The West Indies, meanwhile, were left to rue a disappointing start. They fielded a weakened side, missing key players like Shai Hope, Sherfane Rutherford, and Akeal Hosein due to SA20 commitments. Their bowlers made some early inroads, with Jayden Seales picking up a wicket and Gudakesh Motie delivering an economical spell of 18 runs in four overs. But the rest of the attack couldn’t contain Zadran and Rasooli, who dominated the middle overs.

In response, the West Indies never really recovered. Johnson Charles top-scored with a quick 27, while Quentin Sampson (30), Matthew Forde (25), and Gudakesh Motie (28) offered brief resistance. However, wickets kept falling against Afghanistan’s quality spin, and the chase never gained momentum.

As two-time World Cup champions, the West Indies will be eager to build momentum ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. This series will also give them a chance to test new players and provide valuable game time, regardless of the results.

AFG vs WI Pitch Report:

The pitch at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium is generally considered a batting-friendly surface, with the ball coming onto the bat nicely and offering true bounce. It tends to be dry and flat, which makes it easier for batters to play their shots and build big innings, often resulting in high-scoring matches. Fast bowlers may get some early assistance with the new ball, but the track usually becomes flatter as the game progresses, reducing seam movement and putting more pressure on bowlers to use variations. Spinners can also be effective in the middle overs if the surface starts to wear and roughen, but overall the pitch favors the batters. With the possibility of dew later in the evening, chasing teams often find it slightly easier under lights.

AFG vs WI Weather Report:

On the evening of January 21 at around 6:30 PM local time at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the weather is expected to be clear and pleasant with virtually no chance of rain. Skies should be mostly clear as temperatures cool to around 20–21 °C, making it comfortable for play. Light to moderate winds are likely, but overall conditions should remain dry and stable throughout the match period, with humidity rising slightly as the night progresses. With negligible rain probability and calm skies, it looks set to be an ideal evening for cricket under lights.

Expected Scores:

1st Innings Expected Score: 165–180 runs
2nd Innings Expected Score: 155–175 runs
