Massive blow for Sydney Thunder as Ravichandran Ashwin ruled out of entire BBL season due to injury

Ravichandran Ashwin’s dream of playing in an overseas league after retirement has suffered a major setback, as a knee injury in Chennai has ruled him out of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL 15).

The legendary Indian off-spinner was set to feature for Sydney Thunder, becoming the first nationally-capped Indian to play in the Australian league.

Ashwin has undergone surgery, and with a lengthy recovery period expected, he will not be able to participate in the tournament. Trent Copeland, Sydney Thunder’s general manager, expressed the team’s disappointment:
“Everyone at Sydney Thunder was devastated to learn of Ash’s knee injury that has ruled him out of BBL|15, and we wish him well in his recovery.”

Potential non-playing role
Despite the setback, Sydney Thunder plan to involve Ashwin in a non-playing capacity, leveraging his experience and building a long-term relationship with the Indian star.

“We are hopeful of welcoming him into our dugout for part of BBL|15, introducing him to our fans at events and building a long-term relationship,” Copeland added.

Ashwin also expressed gratitude to the Thunder management and shared his plans during recovery:
“My focus now is recovery and coming back stronger. I will be watching every game (probably at odd hours in Chennai) and cheering for both our women’s and men’s teams. If rehab and travel line up, and only if the doctors are happy, I would love to be around later in the season and say hello in person.”

BBL 15 schedule
The 15th edition of the Big Bash League is set to begin on December 14, with Sydney Thunder facing Hobart Hurricanes in their opening match on December 16.
