As Mashrafe Bin Mortaza approached the net session at the BCB Academy Ground in Mirpur, where Sylhet Strikers’ bowlers were honing their skills, a distinctive figure in a white jacket caught everyone’s attention. Mustafizur Rahman, a player from Comilla Victorians, was vigorously running in and skillfully hitting the stumps.
The usual elements of a cricket session, such as the run-up to the crease, the movement in the air, and the satisfying sound of stumps being disturbed, weren’t the surprising factors. What raised eyebrows was the fact that Mustafizur Rahman, a player from a different franchise, was actively participating in Sylhet Strikers’ net session.
Although it’s common for BPL teams to share the field for net sessions, it’s rare for players from one franchise to bowl in another’s practice session. Both Sylhet Strikers and Comilla Victorians were engaged in their respective practice sessions, and the unexpected appearance of Mustafizur Rahman added an intriguing twist to the routine.
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, who had recently played the opening game for his franchise, joined his first practice session after a break from the field, focusing on regaining fitness. Despite concerns about Mashrafe’s fitness this season, his mere presence on the field served as a significant motivational factor for Sylhet Strikers.
Zakir, a player from Sylhet, emphasized the importance of Mashrafe’s leadership, stating,
Actually, rather than Mashrafe bhai’s performance, him being in the field is the main motivation for us. Him being there makes decision-making easy, which is what I feel and that’s important for us.
Zakir’s sentiments proved accurate as Mashrafe took charge, showcasing his leadership qualities. During the net session, he bowled deliveries, explaining the seam direction and grip of eager fast bowling coach Dollar Mahmud and the attentive net bowlers. Sylhet’s Rejaur Rahman Raja and the spin coach were also present as Mashrafe demonstrated his skills, consistently delivering outswingers with precision.
Despite concerns about Mashrafe’s fitness, his value in the Sylhet dressing room remains undisputed. With the team finishing as runners-up in their maiden appearance last season under his leadership, his presence continues to be a driving force for Sylhet Strikers.
