Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin reviewed the second T20I between India and England, held on January 25 in Chennai, and singled out young English batter Jamie Smith as a player to watch in the future.
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin praised the 24-year-old Surrey batter, highlighting his all-round game:
“I want to talk about one batter from England. I played county cricket against him six years ago. He’s a wicketkeeper-batter and plays for Surrey now. England often brands youngsters as superstars, but Jamie Smith isn’t getting the same attention yet. Mark my words, he will be a big player.”
Ashwin commended Smith’s ability to handle both spin and pace, noting his skillful batting approach. Smith scored 22 runs in the Chennai T20I, leaving a strong impression on Ashwin.

The Indian spinner also had advice for England’s vice-captain Harry Brook, who has struggled against Varun Chakravarthy, being dismissed by him in both matches of the series. Ashwin pointed out Brook’s difficulty in reading Varun’s googlies and suggested he work on his technique.
Known for his sharp cricketing insights, Ashwin’s praise for Jamie Smith has turned the spotlight on the young batter, with fans eager to see more of him in the ongoing series and beyond.
