Marco Jansen grabbed 7 wickets, leading to Sri Lanka’s lowest-ever score in Test cricket.

Fast bowler Marco Jansen tore through Sri Lanka’s batting lineup, taking an incredible 7-13 as South Africa bowled them out for just 42 on the second day of the first Test at Kingsmead, Durban. This marks Sri Lanka’s lowest-ever Test total, though still far from the all-time low of 26 set by New Zealand against England in 1955.

South Africa, who were dismissed for 191 earlier in the day, now hold a commanding 149-run lead heading into the second innings.

For Sri Lanka, Kamindu Mendis top-scored with 13, while Lahiru Kumara managed an unbeaten 10. None of the other batters reached double figures as South Africa’s pace attack wreaked havoc.

Earlier, South Africa’s innings was held together by skipper Temba Bavuma’s gritty 70. The only other meaningful contribution came from Keshav Maharaj, batting at No. 10, with a quick-fire 24.

Sri Lankan pacers Asitha Fernando and Vishwa Fernando picked up three and two wickets, respectively, but Lahiru Kumara was the standout bowler, claiming 3-70. Kumara also delivered a fiery spell, dismissing Kyle Verreynne early on Thursday and injuring all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, who later returned to help Kagiso Rabada add 26 for the last wicket.

Unlike the rain-hit opening day, Thursday saw bright sunshine and a strong breeze, setting the stage for Jansen’s remarkable spell and a thrilling day of cricket.
