Mahmudullah Riyad Retires from T20Is as Bangladesh Takes on India Today

As Bangladesh prepares for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, questions arose about the inclusion of 38-year-old Mahmudullah. Speculation intensified before the first T20I when captain Najmul Hossain Shanto hinted that Mahmudullah would discuss his future with the selectors after the series.

In a pre-match press conference, Mahmudullah clarified that his retirement from T20Is after the India series was a planned decision. He announced that the third T20I in Hyderabad would be his final match.

Reflecting on his highs and lows in T20Is, Mahmudullah recalled his most frustrating moment: the 2016 T20 World Cup match against India in Bangalore, where he and Mushfiqur Rahim failed to score two runs off three balls. He noted that his greatest moment was during the Nidahas Trophy, where he scored an unbeaten 43 off 18 balls to secure a thrilling victory against Sri Lanka.

Although Mahmudullah’s 17-year T20I career is nearing its end, the Tigers are not yet in the post-Mahmudullah era. He will play in the second T20I in Delhi, the same venue where he and Mushfiqur led Bangladesh to their first T20I victory over India in 2019.

Bangladesh also remembers a recent ODI win against Sri Lanka at this venue during the 2023 ODI World Cup. After a disappointing batting performance in the first T20I, which they lost by seven wickets, the Tigers must improve if they hope to win at this ground again.
