Mahidul Islam Sets New Record for Fastest Fifty by a Bangladeshi in BPL
Mahidul Islam has cemented his place in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) history with a blistering 18-ball half-century, the fastest by a Bangladeshi batsman in the tournament. Playing for the Khulna Tigers at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, the wicketkeeper-batsman achieved the feat against the Chittagong Kings in the day’s first match.
In doing so, Mahidul surpassed Rony Talukdar’s previous record. In January 2023, Rony scored a 19-ball fifty for the Rangpur Riders against the Comilla Victorians, also at Mirpur.
A Record Beyond BPL
Mahidul’s incredible knock isn’t just a BPL milestone—it also ties the record for the fastest fifty by a Bangladeshi batsman in recognized T20 cricket. Liton Das previously achieved a similar feat, scoring a 50 off 18 balls against Ireland in Chattogram earlier in 2023.
Sabbir is determined to prove himself once again in the 11th BPL.
The Bigger Picture
Mahidul’s unbeaten 59 off just 22 balls included 6 massive sixes, making it the third-fastest fifty in BPL history. Only two players have recorded faster fifties in the tournament: Pakistan’s Ahmed Shehzad, who scored a 16-ball fifty against Duronto Rajshahi in 2012, and Sunil Narine, who shattered that record with a 13-ball fifty for the Comilla Victorians against the Chattogram Challengers in 2022.
Mahidul now joins an elite club of players with 18-ball fifties in the BPL. Khushdil Shah achieved the feat for the Comilla Victorians against the Dhaka Dominators in 2023, while Will Jacks matched it for the Chattogram Challengers against the Sylhet Sunrisers in 2022.
This remarkable performance not only underscores Mahidul’s explosive batting abilities but also adds another milestone to the rich history of the BPL.
