Latham ruled out of Pakistan ODI series due to fractured hand

New Zealand’s Tom Latham has been ruled out of the ODI series against Pakistan after fracturing his right hand during training. Michael Bracewell will step in as captain, while Henry Nicholls has been called up to replace Latham in the squad.

Latham, who was set to lead the team in Mitchell Santner’s absence due to IPL commitments, suffered the injury earlier this week. X-rays confirmed the extent of the damage, ruling him out of the series.

Mitch Hay will take over wicketkeeping duties, while Bracewell continues as captain after leading the side in the T20I series.

Meanwhile, Will Young will leave the squad after the first match in his hometown of Napier as he prepares for the birth of his first child. Uncapped 23-year-old batter Rhys Mariu, who boasts an impressive first-class average of 61.73, has earned his first international call-up as cover.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead acknowledged the challenges posed by player unavailability but saw it as an opportunity for others to step up.

“We’ve had to be flexible this tour with numerous players unavailable for different reasons,” Stead said. “It’s great to introduce Rhys to the squad for the first time and also to welcome Henry back.

Tom Latham Applauds Black Caps for Memorable Series Victory in India

“Henry has been in strong form since recovering from his injury, and his experience will be valuable to the team. Losing Tom as captain right before the series is disappointing, and we wish him a speedy recovery. However, Michael has done a fantastic job leading the team in the T20Is, and the side is in good hands.

“Lastly, we send our best wishes to Will and his wife Elise as they prepare to welcome their first child—a truly special moment for them.”

The uncapped duo of Muhammad Abbas and Nick Kelly had already been called up for the series, while Kane Williamson opted out.

New Zealand recently secured a 4-1 victory in the T20I series against Pakistan.
