India’s selectors announced a 15-member squad on September 1, with Shreyas Iyer named captain and Tilak Varma appointed vice-captain. The three matches will be played in New Delhi on September 13, 15 and 17.
Following the squad announcement, Krunal shared a brief message on his Instagram Story, writing, “Hope is still alive,” suggesting that he remains determined to earn another opportunity with India.
The all-rounder has strengthened his case through two impressive IPL seasons with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, playing an important role in their successful campaigns. He claimed 31 wickets across the two seasons while also making useful contributions with the bat.
Despite his recent IPL performances, Krunal has now been away from international cricket for around five years. The selectors opted to retain Axar Patel, alongside Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi, as their main spin options.
Axar’s recent T20I numbers have been modest, with four wickets across seven appearances against Ireland and England. However, the selectors have preferred continuity over recalling Krunal.
India’s Afghanistan series squad also includes several players with fitness concerns. Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar have been selected subject to fitness clearances following injuries picked up during the England tour.
Hardik Pandya has also been left out after a leg issue delayed his return to competitive cricket. With several players facing fitness concerns, changes to India’s playing XI remain possible before the series begins.
