In a dazzling display of power-hitting, Heinrich Klaasen led Durban’s Super Giants to their inaugural SA20 final, guiding them to a commanding 69-run victory over the Joburg Super Kings in Qualifier 2 at the Wanderers. Klaasen’s thunderous 74 off a mere 30 deliveries (including 3 fours and 7 sixes) propelled DSG to a formidable total of 211/6. Supported ably by Wiaan Mulder, whose blistering unbeaten 50 off just 23 balls (comprising 3 fours and 3 sixes) added significant impetus, and debutant Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who contributed a solid 35 off 23 balls, Klaasen orchestrated a formidable batting performance.
Despite the Super Kings’ efforts to stifle DSG’s momentum, reducing them to 94/4 in the 12.1 overs, courtesy of a fiery spell by left-arm seamer Nandre Burger (2/27), Klaasen and Mulder’s explosive partnership of 101 runs in a mere 38 balls for the fifth wicket shifted the balance decisively in favor of the Super Giants.
The Super Kings’ pursuit was heavily reliant on their skipper Faf du Plessis, but his early departure, caught brilliantly by Quinton de Kock, set the stage for a daunting challenge for the home team.
Despite commendable contributions from Moeen Ali (30), Reeza Hendricks (27), and Donovan Ferreira (24), the Super Kings fell short as none could match the sheer force displayed by Klaasen earlier in the day.
With 447 runs to his name, Klaasen now stands second on the Betway SA20 leading run-scorers list, requiring 84 runs in the upcoming final to surpass MI Cape Town’s Ryan Rickelton at the summit.
Backed by a stellar fielding effort and a disciplined bowling performance, spearheaded by Junior Dala’s 4/38, supported admirably by Naveen (2/27) and Dwaine Pretorius (2/17), the Super Giants exhibited a complete team effort.
Their exceptional fielding was epitomized by Naveen-ul-Haq’s sensational two-handed grab at mid-off, showcasing the Super Giants’ all-around prowess.
Having overcome the setback of their loss to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in Qualifier 1, the Super Giants have now set their sights on redemption as they prepare to face off against the Sunrisers once again in the final at Newlands on Saturday, marking a rematch with their rivals in their quest for SA20 glory.
