Kane Williamson Signs with London Spirit and Middlesex for Upcoming Season

New Zealand batter Kane Williamson has been announced as the first direct overseas signing in the men’s Hundred and will captain London Spirit in this year’s tournament. Alongside his role in the Hundred, Williamson will also represent Middlesex during his four-month stay in the UK.

The 34-year-old has yet to feature in the Hundred, having previously withdrawn from his 2021 contract with Birmingham Phoenix due to an elbow injury. He is set to make his debut in the season opener at Lord’s on August 5, joining Spirit as part of the new rules allowing teams to retain a player outside of the draft.

London Spirit’s general manager, Fraser Stewart, expressed excitement over Williamson’s signing, stating,

“For us to be able to make a direct signing of this calibre is truly exciting for London Spirit, and I am sure he will be looking forward to captaining our talented side.”

Meanwhile, Williamson’s move to Middlesex will see him play at least 10 Vitality Blast matches and five County Championship fixtures. The experienced batter, who has previously played for Gloucestershire and Yorkshire, will arrive in May after completing his stint with Karachi Kings in the PSL.

Speaking on his decision, Williamson shared,

“The opportunity to play at Lord’s, one of my favourite grounds in the world, is really special. Middlesex is a club with a rich heritage, and I’m looking forward to contributing to both formats.”

Middlesex’s director of cricket, Alan Coleman, hailed the signing as a major boost for the club, emphasizing the impact Williamson’s experience will have on the squad, particularly the younger players.

With New Zealand touring Zimbabwe in July-August, Williamson—who is no longer centrally contracted with NZC—is free to explore opportunities in England, adding significant strength to both London Spirit and Middlesex for the upcoming season.
