In a major development, reports indicate that Jay Shah, the current BCCI secretary, is set to take over as ICC chairman from December 1, with plans for him to serve two consecutive terms of three years each. This marks a shift from the current system of three two-year terms for the ICC chair. According to Cricbuzz, the recommendation was discussed during a recent meeting of ICC board members in Dubai, where key topics included the tenure of the chairman and the independent director.
On October 21, the ICC confirmed that the proposal would be circulated for approval among its Full and Associate Members. The primary goal behind this policy shift is to strengthen governance stability and provide greater security for both the chairman and independent director roles.
Jay Shah’s Replacement Not on BCCI’s Agenda as Apex Council Prepares for Key Meeting
Jay Shah Tenure Begins December 1
Jay Shah will officially step into his role as ICC chairman on December 1, replacing outgoing chair Greg Barclay, who has completed two of his three possible terms since his election in 2020. The position of ICC independent director, however, remains vacant following the departure of former Pepsico chairperson Indra Nooyi, who completed her tenure earlier this year.
As Shah prepares for his new responsibilities at the ICC, attention turns to who will succeed him as BCCI secretary. Although there were rumors that DDCA president Rohan Jaitley was a top contender, Jaitley has denied any plans to step into the role, reaffirming his focus on leading the DDCA. Other possible candidates to manage the BCCI in Shah’s absence include BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar, joint-secretary Devajit Saikia, and Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel.
