Jasprit Bumrah Set for Afghanistan Test Return, Likely to Miss ODI Series Due to Workload Management

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is reportedly in line to feature for India in their one-off Test match against Afghanistan in June, subject to clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team, as workload management remains the key factor in his availability.

Bumrah is currently featuring in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has played all 12 matches so far for the Mumbai Indians. The right-arm pacer, who also took on stand-in captaincy duties against Punjab Kings, is expected to feature in two more league matches before the season concludes.

According to sources close to the BCCI, the initial plan is to include Bumrah in the Test squad for the Afghanistan encounter, provided his workload is deemed to be within permissible limits. However, he is unlikely to participate in the subsequent three-match ODI series.

“If the medical team approves and Bumrah’s workload is under permissible limits, he might play the Test match against Afghanistan. But there is no chance of him playing the ODI series. If there is even the slightest issue with his workload, he will be rested for the full series,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying via NDTV.

Despite the tight scheduling between the IPL and international fixtures, India are not expected to make major changes to their Test and ODI setup for the Afghanistan series.

Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants pacer Prince Yadav is reportedly being considered for a maiden India call-up in the ODI squad after an impressive IPL season, where he has taken 16 wickets and emerged as his franchise’s leading wicket-taker.

In the leadership group, Shubman Gill is expected to captain both the Test and ODI sides, while KL Rahul is likely to take up wicketkeeping duties in the 50-over format, with Ishan Kishan seen as his backup ahead of the struggling Rishabh Pant.

India’s only Test against Afghanistan is scheduled to begin on June 6, followed by the three-match ODI series starting June 14.
