Pakistan’s head coach for the red-ball format, Jason Gillespie, has urged former cricketers to be more mindful of their public statements, highlighting that excessive criticism could harm the morale of the current team.
In a recent Sky Sports interview, Gillespie stressed how comments from former players on TV shows and YouTube channels significantly impact the national squad.
“I’m very protective of players and the staff I work with. We’re working to create a supportive environment, and if that’s undermined, it can lead to frustration,” he said.
Gillespie also encouraged ex-players to be more thoughtful on social media, noting that today’s players closely follow such feedback.
“Many former players have platforms on YouTube or other social media, and they’re paid to share opinions. Players notice everything, and positive feedback from those they looked up to is uplifting. But, heavy criticism can have the opposite effect,” Gillespie added.
The former Australian fast bowler also expressed frustration over his reduced role within the Pakistan setup, as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently removed him and Test captain Shan Masood from the selection committee, limiting their influence over key decisions like team selection and pitch preparation.

“There’s always some frustration. When I joined Pakistan cricket, I was told there was a long-term plan and an emphasis on strong communication. It’s disappointing when things aren’t handled as expected,” he concluded.
Currently, Pakistan is in the middle of a three-match Test series against England, with the series tied 1-1. The deciding Test in Rawalpindi has both teams fully focused on securing the series win.
