England’s all-time leading wicket-taker, James Anderson, is set to continue his career with Lancashire at the age of 42, after agreeing to a one-year contract with the county.
Anderson has been away from the game since his emotional international farewell at Lord’s in July. However, he has expressed a desire to return to professional cricket, feeling he has unfinished business after being pushed towards retirement by the England management.
Although he went unsold at the recent Indian Premier League auction, Anderson has now committed to playing for Lancashire once again this summer. He will feature in the Division Two of the Rothesay County Championship and the Vitality Blast, marking his return to T20 cricket after an 11-year break.
The veteran pacer, who will turn 43 during the season, has spent much of his time since leaving the England team as a fast-bowling mentor, but he is now eager to get back on the field. His last appearance for Lancashire was in 2023, where he took seven wickets for 35 runs.
“I am incredibly excited to sign this contract with Lancashire and resume playing professional cricket again next season,” said Anderson, who has 704 Test wickets to his name. “This club has been a huge part of my life since I was a teenager, and I’m really looking forward to representing the Red Rose again and helping the team in both red and white-ball cricket.”
Anderson has spent the winter maintaining his fitness while working with England’s Test team and is ready to hit the ground running when the county season begins in April. He added, “I love playing at Emirates Old Trafford, and the chance to bowl in front of our members and supporters again this summer will be really special.”
While Anderson has expressed interest in the Hundred, he is currently focused on his commitments to Lancashire. He continues to co-host the popular Tailenders podcast and has broadcast experience, though his schedule will depend on his availability for England’s bowlers over the summer months.

The news of Anderson’s return will be a major boost for Lancashire, as they look to bounce back into the top flight. It is likely to send a shiver down the spines of second-tier batters across the country.
Lancashire’s Director of Cricket Performance, Mark Chilton, a long-time teammate of Anderson, said, “It’s fantastic news that Jimmy has chosen to continue his playing career with us. His desire to get back on the park has been growing stronger every day, and he’s fully committed to both the County Championship and the Vitality Blast this summer.”
“To have England’s all-time leading wicket-taker and one of cricket’s greatest players back in our dressing room is incredible. Our members, supporters, and cricket fans around the world will be thrilled to watch him in action for Lancashire next summer.”
