With New Zealand yet to have a confirmed Future Tours Programme (FTP) schedule involving England beyond 2027, there is uncertainty over whether Williamson will get another opportunity to play a Test at Lord’s.
The former Black Caps captain signed a deal with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 2025, representing Middlesex and the London Spirit in The Hundred, both of which are based at Lord’s. As part of that arrangement, he stepped away from his New Zealand central contract and will feature in this series without one.
Speaking ahead of the match, Williamson described Lord’s as one of the most unique venues in world cricket.
“It is always a special Test match. If you look over your career, you only get a handful of opportunities to come to Lord’s and play,” he said.
New Zealand last played a Test at the ground in June 2022, when they were beaten by five wickets in a memorable match where Joe Root struck a match-winning fourth-innings century.
Williamson praised the tradition and atmosphere of Lord’s, highlighting its history, the Long Room walk, and the overall experience for visiting players.
“The way they maintain the tradition is quite special. It’s unique to Lord’s — the history that surrounds it, walking through the Long Room, meeting members, and the iconic lunches. It’s a special place to play,” he said.
“For a number of players in the dressing room, it’s their first time, and they’re excited about that prospect,” he added.
The 35-year-old has had mixed fortunes at the venue, averaging 32 in eight innings, but remains on the Lord’s Honours Board for his superb 132 in 2015 — a knock that came in a losing cause.
“The honours board is something people talk about a lot. It was an amazing game, but we ended up losing,” Williamson recalled.
“It was a good pitch initially, then overhead conditions changed everything with the Dukes ball. Those are the unique challenges you get here in England,” he added.
New Zealand have named a strong squad for the England tour, featuring Tom Latham (captain), Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, and others.
