Ishan Kishan Rejoins as Jharkhand Captain in Ranji Trophy After Last Season’s Controversial Exit

Ishan Kishan has returned as captain of the Jharkhand Ranji Trophy team after missing out last season, which led to his exclusion from the BCCIs central contract. The left-handed batter became a regular in India’s white-ball team after Rishabh Pant’s accident in December 2022. However, during India’s tour of South Africa, Kishan took a break and did not participate in any BCCI matches, which raised concerns since the board emphasized the importance of domestic cricket.

Earlier this year, he played in the DY Patil T20 Cup before the IPL, leading to discussions about balancing franchise and state cricket. His absence from domestic matches contributed to his omission from the BCCI’s 2023-24 central contracts.

Kishan has since regained his form with a century in the Duleep Trophy for India C and also played in the Irani Cup for the Rest of India. Now, as captain of Jharkhand’s 16-member squad, he will lead a young team, with Virat Singh as vice-captain and Kumar Kushagra as the wicketkeeper.

Jharkhand’s Ranji Trophy campaign begins against Assam in Guwahati. Last season, they finished third from the bottom in Group A.

Jharkhand’s selection committee chairman, Subroto Das, expressed confidence in Kishan’s leadership, especially with a young team following the retirement of senior players like Saurabh Tiwary, Shahbaz Nadeem, and Varun Aaron.
