Delhi Capitals secured their first victory in the IPL 2024 season by defeating the defending champions Chennai Super Kings. However, their captain Rishabh Pant has been fined Rs 12 lakh.

During Delhi Capitals’ first win of the IPL 2024 season against the Chennai Super Kings, their captain Rishabh Pant was fined Rs 12 lakh for violating the code of conduct.

Pant, in his first IPL season since 2022, will need to pay the fine as his team was found to have a slow over rate against CSK at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium.

“As it was his (Pant’s) team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Pant was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” read a statement from IPL.

Pant’s perspective on the penalty seems inconsequential given his standout performance in DC’s inaugural victory this season. Leading the team, he delivered a solid half-century, propelling DC to a formidable total of 191/5 against CSK.

DC opted for a strategic adjustment in their batting lineup following consecutive defeats at the start of their campaign. Prithvi Shaw was brought into the mix, partnering with David Warner at the top, orchestrating a remarkable start by accumulating 93 runs together.

Warner hit a fast fifty, making 51 runs off 35 balls. After he left, Pant came in at number three. But then Shaw got out on 43, and soon after, DC lost two more wickets quickly, which slowed down their progress.

Pant scored a quick 51 runs from 32 balls, including four fours and three sixes. He got out in the second to last over of the Delhi Capitals’ innings.

DC’s bowlers did a great job defending their total by getting CSK to 7/2 in just 2.5 overs. However, CSK’s middle-order batsmen started to repair the damage. Even though DC’s bowlers kept taking wickets regularly, it meant that CSK had a lot to chase in the final overs.

The only consolation for CSK fans that night was watching MS Dhoni’s brilliant performance, where he played an entertaining unbeaten innings of 37 runs off 16 balls. He hit four fours and three sixes, showing glimpses of his past greatness.
