Vaughan was particularly surprised by fast bowler Jofra Archer not being available for England’s opening Test of the home summer against New Zealand, while continuing his stint with Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing IPL season.
He highlighted the existing agreement between the ECB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which allows English players to complete their IPL commitments even when international fixtures are scheduled shortly afterwards. According to Vaughan, this recurring overlap creates an uncomfortable situation where franchise cricket appears to take precedence over Test matches.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Vaughan stressed that centrally contracted England players are highly valued by the ECB and, in his view, should prioritise national duty over franchise leagues when scheduling conflicts arise.
“I’m sure he’ll be in the squad (for the second Test). It comes midway through June. I think we have a problem in English cricket at the moment because Jofra was obviously staying for the full IPL… If that’s the case, I have a problem with England’s contracts because Jofra has been looked after by them for a few years now on a very handsome contract. So who holds the key to that? I believe the international contract outweighs any franchise,” Vaughan said.
He further added that while franchise leagues provide significant opportunities for players, international Test cricket should remain the highest priority, especially for England’s key performers.
“Look, all these franchise leagues are fantastic… but if we start to put domestic leagues over and above a Test match, I think there’s a real problem now. If I was Rob Key or Brendon McCullum, I would want my best bowler playing in that first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, not here,” he added.
The debate comes amid growing discussion in English cricket circles over the scheduling clash between the IPL and England’s Test summer. Former players have increasingly voiced differing opinions on player availability and priorities.
Meanwhile, Archer is expected to play at least two more matches for the Rajasthan Royals this IPL season, with a potential additional appearance if the franchise qualifies for the playoffs.
England’s Test series against New Zealand begins on June 4, just days after the IPL final, further intensifying the ongoing workload and availability debate.
