Kotak clarified that there is constant communication between the team management and the senior batters, dismissing suggestions of any disconnect or misunderstanding. He emphasised that Kohli and Rohit continue to play an active role in discussions related to India’s ODI strategy.
Regular communication with Gautam Gambhir
Speaking to the media ahead of the second ODI against New Zealand, Kotak explained that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli regularly engage with head coach Gautam Gambhir on current assignments as well as long-term planning.
“They discuss the ODI format, the matches we have coming up and our plans going to South Africa. Most of the time I am there, and they always share their experience. I often see them talking,” Kotak said.
Referring to speculation on social media, he added, “A lot of things appear on social media, which I try to avoid.”
Focus already on the 2027 World Cup
Kotak revealed that preparations for future tournaments, including the 2027 World Cup, are already part of the team’s broader planning. The approach underlines the management’s intent to balance immediate results with long-term objectives.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir has previously avoided making firm commitments regarding Kohli and Rohit’s participation in the 2027 World Cup, citing the time still remaining before the tournament. However, the recent form of both batters has reinforced their importance in India’s ODI setup.
High praise for Rohit and Kohli’s professionalism
The batting coach also praised the professionalism and preparation of the two senior players, highlighting their experience and self-driven approach.
“Both of them are very senior and experienced. They make their own plans, practise at different venues, and arrive early if they feel it is necessary. They know what their body needs — not just in terms of batting, but fitness as well,” Kotak said.
“They are thorough professionals. They don’t need to be told what to do. With the experience they have, they share valuable ideas with other players, and those discussions happen regularly.”
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently part of India’s three-match ODI series against New Zealand. Kohli starred in the opening ODI with a fluent 93 off 91 balls, narrowly missing out on a century, while Rohit contributed 26.
The duo will next be in action in the second ODI at the Saurashtra Cricket Stadium in Rajkot on January 14.
