Shaheen Afridi is representing the Brisbane Heat, while Mohammad Rizwan is set to don the gloves for the Melbourne Renegades in the highly anticipated encounter.
Afridi fires warning at Rizwan
Ahead of the match, Afridi was part of a customary pre-game interaction on the Fox Cricket show. During the conversation, the host revealed that Rizwan had jokingly warned Afridi that he would “hit him out of the park.” The left-arm pacer responded with a sharp yet light-hearted retort, saying, “I won’t allow him to do that,” before breaking into laughter.
While the exchange was clearly in good spirits, it added an extra layer of intrigue to the contest, given the duo’s long-standing association with the Pakistan national team.
Past on-field exchange and strong camaraderie
Afridi and Rizwan have previously shared a brief on-field disagreement during the Champions Trophy 2025, when Rizwan expressed his frustration after Afridi bowled a loose delivery to Tom Latham that was dispatched to the boundary. Rizwan was visibly unhappy and admonished the pacer from behind the stumps.
However, such moments are often part of competitive cricket, and the two players are known to share a strong off-field bond.
Mutual respect despite rivalry
The camaraderie between the pair was further highlighted when Shaheen Afridi replaced Mohammad Rizwan as Pakistan’s ODI captain. Afridi later revealed that he had discussed the leadership decision with Rizwan before accepting the role, underlining the mutual respect between the two.
Now, however, the friends turn rivals at Simonds Stadium in Geelong. With both teams playing their opening match of the season, all eyes will be on Shaheen Afridi as he looks to swing the new ball aggressively against the Renegades’ batting lineup — with Mohammad Rizwan firmly in his sights.
