Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Clive Madande set an unwanted record by conceding 42 byes in a Test innings against Ireland on Friday. Madande, playing in his tough debut after being out for a duck on the first day, gave away more runs than Ireland’s 40-run lead. The byes were partly due to his bowlers sending balls down the leg side and late swing. Madande broke the previous record of 37 byes, set by England’s Les Ames in 1934.

This is the first time a wicketkeeper has conceded more than 40 byes in Test cricket.

Zimbabwe could have had a first-innings lead, but Andy McBrine and Matthew Humphreys added 47 runs for the last wicket. Joylord Gumbie and Prince Masvaure then batted out the last 15 minutes, leaving Zimbabwe 12-0 in their second innings, 28 runs behind.

Former Zimbabwe international Peter Moor top-scored for Ireland with 79, the highest Test score by an Ireland opener. Moor was just four runs short of his best, set while playing for Zimbabwe in 2018.

Zimbabwe’s Tanaka Chivanga took his first three Test wickets, finishing with 3-39, while Blessing Muzarabani took 3-53.
