McCullum stepped down from the role after England suffered a 2-1 Test series defeat to New Zealand. Lehmann revealed that he has not been contacted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) regarding the position and believes the board may already have a preferred candidate in mind.
The former Australia all-rounder also stressed that he is content in his current role with Northamptonshire. Lehmann recently guided the Steelbacks to their third T20 Blast title, defeating Hampshire Hawks in the final in Birmingham on Saturday, July 18.
“I’m very happy coaching Northants and I haven’t had any phone calls. You’d certainly listen to it. I’m sure there are so many applicants. My feeling is they’ve already made up their mind. If you remove someone mid-summer, you’ve got somebody in mind,” Lehmann told Sky Sports.
Lehmann was also full of praise for Langer and believes the former Australia opener could make a significant impact if he is appointed as England’s Test coach. Langer is reportedly among the leading candidates after Andy Flower turned down the opportunity.
“If he were to go for it, he’d be a really good coach. Whoever takes it on, they’ve got some really talented players. I see some good players in the county system,” Lehmann added.
Langer played a key role in rebuilding Australian cricket following the infamous ‘Sandpapergate’ scandal and helped transform the team into one of the world’s leading Test sides. Under his guidance, Australia retained the Ashes in England in 2019 before securing a dominant 4-0 series victory at home in 2022.
Apart from Langer, Jonathan Trott, Stephen Fleming, Richard Dawson and Kumar Sangakkara are also reportedly among the names being considered by England.
