Brook recently led England through a demanding series against India, producing an impressive performance with the bat. However, the Yorkshire batter admitted that the responsibility of captaincy took a significant toll on him.
“Captaining is bloody hard. It takes a lot out of you. The way we played against India was awesome, but at the end of it, I was tired. And I was glad that I was coming back just as a batter,” Brook was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
Brook reflects on England leadership
Following Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket, Brook was considered a potential candidate to take on a greater leadership role across formats. However, the ECB opted to appoint Joe Root instead.
Brook admitted that leading England across all three formats would have been an attractive challenge, but he understands the decision made by the board and accepted the outcome.
For now, Brook is enjoying a return to domestic cricket with The Hundred, where he can focus solely on his batting and reconnect with his franchise and coaching environment.
Brook eager for IPL comeback
Brook’s future in the IPL has also remained a talking point. He is currently serving a two-year suspension from the tournament after withdrawing from the 2025 season.
The batter had been bought by Delhi Capitals for ₹6.25 crore at the November 2024 mega-auction but subsequently pulled out to manage his workload and prioritise his England responsibilities after becoming white-ball captain.
Brook is expected to be eligible to return to the IPL auction in 2028 and has made no secret of his desire to play in the competition again.
The England star believes playing in one of the world’s leading T20 leagues can provide valuable experience and help players develop their game further.
