Ahead of the Australian tour, Mohammad Hafeez, serving as the team director of the Pakistan cricket team, openly criticized Haris Rauf’s decision to withdraw from the Test series in Australia. Hafeez, in a pre-tour media address, shed light on Rauf’s initial reluctance and subsequent change of mind.
A report from a local media outlet revealed that Rauf, deeply affected by the criticism, went as far as contemplating international retirement. However, after seeking counsel from friends, he reversed his decision, redirecting his focus back to his cricketing career.
The report also highlighted that former director Mickey Arthur, recognizing Rauf’s exceptional pace, actively attempted to persuade him to join the Australia tour during the 2023 World Cup. Despite Arthur’s insistence on Rauf’s crucial role, with a desire to witness him in action against Australia in Test matches, Rauf consistently turned down the proposals. He cited his limited experience in first-class cricket and concerns about potential injuries as the reasons for his refusal.
Additionally, the report claimed that during the World Cup, the 30-year-old fast bowler had alerted the team management about his fitness concerns. Rauf expressed reservations about his current fitness level, foreseeing challenges during Test matches and emphasizing the necessity for careful consideration.
