Dickwella, 33, returns to the Test squad after more than three years away from the format. His last Test appearance came against New Zealand in March 2023. He has been brought back in the absence of regular wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis, who is unavailable due to injury.
De Silva revealed that Dickwella’s wicketkeeping ability was the main reason behind his selection, particularly given the demands of playing at Galle.
“The only thing I have to tell Niroshan Dickwella is to keep well. That’s why he’s in the team,” de Silva said.
Kusal Mendis had occupied the No. 7 wicketkeeper-batter role for several years, leaving Dickwella with limited opportunities to return to the Test side. However, the Sri Lankan captain believes Galle requires the best available wicketkeeper behind the stumps.
“But when you play at Galle, the most important thing is that the player with the best glovework plays,” de Silva explained.
The selectors also considered domestic performers Sadeera Samarawickrama and uncapped Anjala Bandara, both of whom impressed during the 2026 domestic four-day competition. However, Dickwella’s superior wicketkeeping skills ultimately proved decisive.
De Silva said the decision was made in consultation with the coaching staff and selectors, who agreed that Dickwella was the best option for the Galle Test.
Sri Lanka have also included four fast bowlers—Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka. Lahiru Kumara’s selection comes despite a recent injury concern, but de Silva acknowledged that Sri Lanka’s limited pace-bowling depth played a role in the decision.
