Australia’s white-ball linchpin, Glenn Maxwell, found himself in a precarious situation recently when he was hospitalized in Adelaide due to excessive drinking after attending a concert. The incident led to a stern statement from head coach Andrew McDonald, emphasizing the need for Maxwell to prioritize his well-being.
In a conversation with the Sydney Evening News, McDonald expressed his concerns and expectations for Maxwell’s future behaviour.
I’ve spoken to Glenn, had a good chat with him yesterday around the incident. His looking after himself needs to be a consideration moving forward,
McDonald stated.
who was granted a break for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies used the time to attend a golf event in Adelaide before the unfortunate incident occurred. Despite the incident, McDonald underscored Maxwell’s significance in Australia’s white-ball formats and expressed a desire to see him play for the country for several more years.
We want Glenn Maxwell to play cricket for the next three to four years for Australia. Can he make it to the next World Cup in 2027 in South Africa? Who knows? But he’s a key player in our white-ball formats,
McDonald asserted.
The coach acknowledged the need to manage Maxwell’s workload, especially considering a previous severe leg injury and other incidents that kept him out of the team.
But we want Glenn Maxwell to play for Australia for as long as he can. We’re going to have to do our end, and Glenn is no doubt going to have to hold up his end of the bargain.
The incident is not the first time Maxwell has faced trouble. In 2022, post the T20 World Cup, he suffered a severe leg fracture during a party, leading to a lengthy absence from the Australian team. Maxwell also experienced injuries from a fall off a golf cart in November last year.
McDonald acknowledged the honest mistake but stressed the importance of Maxwell re-evaluating his choices.
He needs to obviously have a look at what he’s doing on his end and is that the right thing to be doing at that time? Thankfully, there’s no harm out of it. He’s well now.
Maxwell, who hasn’t played limited-overs cricket since Australia’s return from India, is expected to continue his formidable form during the upcoming West Indies T20Is starting from February 9.
