In a significant move, Jason Gillespie, the former Australian pace sensation, steps into the role of Pakistan’s new Test coach, while Gary Kirsten, the seasoned South African batsman, is entrusted with guiding the team in white-ball cricket. Azhar Mahmood, previously serving on a temporary basis during the New Zealand series, continues as assistant coach across all formats.
These appointments come after a meticulous recruitment process, with all three coaches signing two-year contracts.
The head coach position had been vacant since Grant Bradburn’s departure in January to helm Glamorgan, following his interim stint after Saqlain Mushtaq’s tenure. Notably, the PCB had engaged with other notable figures, including Shane Watson, before finalizing these appointments.
Kirsten is slated to take charge ahead of the England tour, which kicks off with a four-match T20I series commencing on May 22 in Leeds. Gillespie’s inaugural assignment will be the Bangladesh series in August, featuring a two-Test battle.
The announcement was made by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi at a press conference in Lahore, where he expressed confidence in the newly appointed coaches.
