Gautam Gambhir, Indian Head Coach, Astonished by the Decline of Pakistan Cricket

Former cricketer and current selector Aaqib Javed recently discussed a conversation with India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, who expressed his worries about the state of Pakistan cricket. Gambhir was surprised by Pakistan’s struggles, given the country’s abundant talent.

Recent Challenges

The past year has been tough for Pakistan cricket, marked by frequent changes in leadership and coaching staff. The team faced a significant setback when the USA eliminated them from the T20 World Cup 2024. Additionally, they suffered a historic 2-0 Test series defeat to Bangladesh just last month.

During a podcast, Aaqib shared his experience of meeting Gambhir while India was touring Sri Lanka. Gambhir questioned, “What has happened to Pakistan cricket despite so much talent? What’s going on?”

Decline of a Great Rivalry

Aaqib explained that Gambhir believes the decline of Pakistan cricket threatens the excitement of the iconic India-Pakistan matches. He noted, “If Pakistan’s team continues to fall, one of cricket’s biggest rivalries loses its charm.” Gambhir emphasized that only a few top teams remain, and this rivalry is crucial for the sport’s appeal.

Poor Test Performance

Pakistan’s Test cricket results have been disappointing, with the team failing to win any of their last 11 home Tests since 2022. Out of these matches, seven ended in losses, and four were draws, including the recent 2-0 series loss to Bangladesh and a defeat to England.

New Selection Committee

In response to these challenges, the Pakistan Cricket Board has appointed a new selection committee, reducing its size from seven to five members. Aaqib Javed will lead this committee, which also includes Aleem Dar, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, and Hassan Cheema. Notably, the captain and head coach will no longer participate in team selection votes.
