India head coach Gautam Gambhir has strongly responded to claims by Australia’s coach Andrew McDonald, who accused India of attempting to intimidate Australian debutant Sam Konstas during the tense fifth Test at the SCG. McDonald voiced concerns about the on-field confrontation between Konstas and India’s captain, Jasprit Bumrah, after Usman Khawaja’s dismissal on the final ball of Day 1.

McDonald suggested that India’s celebrations following the wicket, especially in close proximity to Konstas, were “quite intimidating.” While acknowledging that India’s actions were within the rules, McDonald expressed concern for Konstas’ mental well-being, suggesting such behavior could affect the young player’s confidence.

Gambhir, however, strongly rejected these claims, calling the suggestion of intimidation “soft” and uncharacteristic of the sport. Known for his fiery attitude, Gambhir stated, “It’s a tough sport played by tough men. You can’t be that soft, as simple as it can get. I don’t think there was anything intimidating about it.”

He further explained that Konstas had no reason to engage with Bumrah during the delay while Khawaja was preparing for his next delivery. “He had no right to be talking to Jasprit Bumrah. It was the umpire’s responsibility, not his,” Gambhir said.

Despite the tension on the field, Australia remained unfazed, defeating India by six wickets in the Sydney Test to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 3-1 series win. This victory also secured Australia’s place in the World Test Championship final, while India’s defeat eliminated them from contention for the WTC final in 2025.ble for their lack of commitment and close the door to a Test return.
