As the IPL 2024 season approaches, another team, SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), finds itself with a new captain, following a trend set by Mumbai Indians. Pat Cummins, Australia’s World Cup-winning skipper, was announced as the captain for SRH, marking the fourth change in leadership for the team in the last three years.

The 30-year-old fast bowler, who was acquired by SRH for a staggering Rs 20.50 crore in last year’s IPL auctions, replaces South African cricketer Aiden Markram, who led SRH in the 2023 season.

Reacting to this change, Irfan Pathan, a member of India’s T20 World Cup-winning team in 2007, raised pertinent questions about the decision.

“While Cummins seems like an ideal choice considering his recent success with Australia in the World Cup, his track record in T20 cricket, especially in the IPL, raises concerns. SRH’s decision to replace Markram after just one year brings into question their strategy,” Pathan commented on Star Sports.

He also highlighted the implications of Cummins’ inclusion on the team composition. “The addition of Cummins may force SRH to rethink their playing XI, potentially sidelining promising players like Wanindu Hasaranga and Marco Jansen due to an overflow of overseas talent. It’s crucial for SRH to strike a balance and ensure the inclusion of key players like Hasaranga,” Pathan added.

Pathan’s remarks underscore the uncertainties surrounding SRH’s leadership choice and the ensuing impact on team dynamics and player selection, adding intrigue to the upcoming IPL season.
