In a decisive move, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah asserted on Wednesday that all centrally contracted cricketers must participate in red-ball cricket within the domestic circuit without exceptions. Addressing reporters during the renaming ceremony of the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Shah emphasized the obligation for players to represent their state teams when called upon by their respective coaches or captains. The statement was prompted by recent controversy surrounding Ishan Kishan and reports suggesting BCCI’s directive for him to play for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy.
While Shah referenced Kishan during his interaction, he clarified that the directive wasn’t aimed specifically at him but applied uniformly to all non-national team players.
“All contracted players have been notified via phone, and formal written communication will follow. If the chairman of selectors, coach, and captain deem it necessary for a player to participate in red-ball cricket, they are expected to comply without any excuses. ‘Nakhre Nahi Chalenge’ (no tantrums). Regarding Ishan Kishan, he’s young, and this directive isn’t targeted solely at him; it’s a blanket rule,” Shah stated firmly.
He further emphasized, “Everyone is expected to adhere to this directive. However, I have granted autonomy to the chairman of the selection committee to make decisions independently.”
Shah underscored that all decisions would be made in consultation with the National Cricket Academy (NCA), taking into consideration players’ physical capabilities and circumstances.
“We are mindful of players’ physical limitations. If a player’s body cannot handle both white-ball and red-ball cricket, we won’t impose unnecessary burdens. However, for those fit and capable, there will be no tolerance for excuses. This directive applies to all centrally contracted players,” Shah reiterated.
With a resolute stance, Shah’s directive signals a commitment to prioritizing the development and commitment of Indian cricketers across all formats of the game.
