Former Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning, who was released by the WPL franchise, announced her intent to make a big impact in the upcoming Women’s Premier League auction with a sensational knock in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). The right-handed batter smashed a blistering 135 off 74 balls for Melbourne Stars against Sydney Sixers, registering the third-highest individual score in WBBL history and finishing with a strike rate of 182.43. The Stars posted a mammoth 219/4 in their 20 overs.
Records Shattered
Lanning’s innings was packed with milestones. Her 135 included 26 boundaries (22 fours and 4 sixes), the most ever by a player in a single WBBL innings. Her knock also helped Melbourne Stars achieve the third-highest team total in WBBL history, trailing only a few record-breaking scores by other sides. Only Lizelle Lee (150*) and Grace Harris (136*) have surpassed Lanning’s individual tally.
WPL Auction Spotlight
Despite being released by Delhi Capitals after leading the side to three consecutive finals, Lanning’s current form makes her a hot commodity for the WPL mega auction. In four WBBL matches so far, she has scored 288 runs at an average of 96 with a strike rate of 163. With multiple franchises seeking experienced leaders and explosive batters, Lanning is expected to attract significant interest in next week’s auction.
