The revised policy, approved by England men’s managing director Rob Key, is designed to enhance professionalism, improve on-field performances, and safeguard both the players’ image and the reputation of English cricket.
One of the most significant changes is a ban on players consuming alcohol in public, including in public areas of the team hotel, unless explicit permission is granted by Key or head coach Brendon McCullum. Players have also been strongly advised to avoid drinking in private during matches, with the ECB stressing that preparation, recovery, and professionalism must take priority.
The new guidelines also prohibit players from appearing intoxicated in public or posting alcohol-related content on social media. In addition, a midnight curfew remains in force, while players leaving the team hotel after 10:00 p.m. must notify team management or security and keep them informed of any changes to their plans.
Another notable amendment is the removal of the long-standing tradition of post-match drinks. Under the updated policy, players will not be permitted to consume alcohol immediately after a match, with restrictions only being lifted the day after a Test concludes.
The ECB had already introduced a midnight curfew following England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, where concerns were raised over player conduct during the tour. Incidents involving Harry Brook and, more recently, Stokes and Atkinson further prompted the governing body to tighten its regulations.
According to reports, ECB officials were particularly disappointed by the nightclub incident involving Stokes and Atkinson, with claims that Atkinson was unaware a curfew was in place.
The off-field controversies came during a difficult period for England, who lost the home Test series against New Zealand 2-1. Following the series, long-time captain Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished career.
