New Zealand’s cricketer, Daryl Mitchell, will be sidelined for the upcoming second Test against South Africa to ensure his readiness for the imminent clash with Australia, announced New Zealand Cricket on Thursday.
Having contributed to New Zealand’s commanding 281-run victory in the first Test against the Proteas, Mitchell will be absent from the second encounter beginning next Tuesday due to an ongoing foot ailment.
Despite his commendable record of five centuries in 31 Tests, the 32-year-old batsman will also miss all three Twenty20 matches against Australia this month, as he focuses on recuperating from a foot injury that previously sidelined him during the home Twenty20 series against Pakistan in January, as per New Zealand Cricket’s statement.
Daryl’s role across all formats is pivotal, and ensuring his optimal condition is paramount given the forthcoming series,
remarked Black Caps head coach Gary Stead.
Considering the upcoming schedule, now presents an opportune moment for him to undergo a period of rehabilitation.
In Mitchell’s absence, seamer Will O’Rourke is set to join the squad as planned for the second Test against South Africa in Hamilton.
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s batting stalwart, Kane Williamson, further solidified his status as the world’s leading male batsman with centuries in both innings against the Proteas.
A victory in the upcoming Test would mark a historic milestone for New Zealand, clinching their maiden Test series triumph over South Africa after 17 unsuccessful attempts since 1931.
