Boycott Calls Emerge in Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal and Team Take Major Step Following BCB Elections

Boycott Calls Emerge in Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal and Team Take Major Step Following BCB Elections

38 Clubs Announce Domestic Cricket Boycott

Amidst claims of government interference and widespread irregularities, Aminul Islam Bulbul was recently elected as BCB president. Earlier, Tamim Iqbal had withdrawn his candidature, citing similar concerns about election malpractices. Now, Tamim, along with organizers Masuduzzaman and Abdullah Al Fuad Redwan, has revealed that 38 clubs will boycott all domestic leagues across the country.

“We won’t play—not just in Dhaka, but at the district level as well. We are boycotting all competitions,” said Masuduzzaman, councillor and chairman of Mohammedan’s cricket committee, during a press conference, according to Daily Star.

Masuduzzaman added that the election was manipulated and the newly elected president is illegitimate, compromising the spirit of cricket in Bangladesh. Tamim Iqbal also echoed strong concerns over election malpractices.

“The election held on the 6th was completely manipulated. We do not recognize this election. In our view, the newly elected president Aminul Islam Bulbul is illegitimate. Since the spirit of cricket has been compromised, we hereby declare that we will not participate in any league, from the Premier Division to the lower tiers. For now, cricket will remain suspended,” Masuduzzaman stated.

The boycott calls raise questions about how the government and BCB officials will respond. With major tournaments on the horizon, stakeholders face pressure to resolve the crisis swiftly to safeguard the future of cricket in Bangladesh.
