Big Blow for New Zealand: Ish Sodhi Ruled Out of South Africa T20I Series with Broken Thumb

New Zealand’s T20I campaign against South Africa has hit a major stumbling block as veteran leg-spinner Ish Sodhi has been ruled out for the remainder of the five-match series.

Big Blow for New Zealand: Ish Sodhi Ruled Out of South Africa T20I Series with Broken Thumb

Sodhi sustained a broken thumb during a training session ahead of the series opener. Subsequent scans confirmed a fracture, sidelining the experienced spinner for approximately four weeks of rehabilitation.

No Immediate Replacement Named

Despite losing a key wicket-taker, the Black Caps’ selectors have opted not to name a direct replacement. The team will lean on the spin duo of Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie to lead the slow-bowling attack. Pace spearhead Lockie Ferguson is also set to bolster the squad for the upcoming second and third matches in Hamilton and Auckland.

“Ish is very passionate about playing for New Zealand… He is hugely experienced in the T20 format and will be a big miss for the remainder of the series,” said head coach Rob Walter. “We’re confident with Lockie coming in, as well as Mitch and Cole, that we have appropriate cover.”

Proteas Dominate Series Opener

The injury news comes on the heels of a bruising defeat for the hosts in the first T20I. South Africa’s bowling unit dismantled the New Zealand lineup, skittling them for a meager 91 runs. James Neesham provided the only real resistance with a top score of 26.

South Africa’s Nqobani Mokoena was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/26, supported by two wickets apiece from Gerald Coetzee, Ottneil Baartman, and Keshav Maharaj.

The chase was a formality for the visitors, who reached the target in 16.4 overs with seven wickets to spare. Connor Esterhuizen anchored the innings with an unbeaten 45* to give South Africa a 1-0 lead in the series.

Squad Transition Ahead

Looking toward the final two matches, New Zealand will see a significant leadership and personnel change. Tom Latham is set to take over the captaincy from Mitchell Santner, joining the squad alongside Katene Clarke, Dane Cleaver, and Jayden Lennox for the series conclusion.
