Stokes has joined the Strikers on a one-year deal and will be available throughout the finals. The franchise reportedly beat competition from the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades to secure his services.
The 35-year-old retired from international cricket in June 2026 and is now preparing for his return to the Big Bash, having previously played four matches for the Melbourne Renegades during the 2014–15 season.
Paine revealed that the Strikers identified Stokes as a top-three batter from the beginning of their discussions, with the all-rounder also comfortable with the proposed role.
The Strikers are considering Stokes as a potential opening partner for Matt Short. Paine believes the pace and bounce typically found on Australian pitches could perfectly suit Stokes’ aggressive batting style.
Paine also sees Stokes as a potential bowling option for Adelaide, despite the injury issues that have occasionally restricted his ability to bowl. His all-round skills could therefore make him a key figure for the Strikers throughout the season.
The prospect of Stokes and Short opening together is expected to generate plenty of excitement. Short is also willing to move to No. 3 if required, giving the Strikers greater flexibility at the top of the order.
Beyond his cricketing impact, Stokes’ return is also likely to attract significant attention from Australian fans. Despite the fierce Ashes rivalry, Paine believes Stokes has earned widespread respect in Australia for his competitiveness, skill and determination to win.
