BCCI Urged to Keep ‘Impact Player’ Rule to Extend Dhoni’s IPL Career

Former Indian batsman Ambati Rayudu believes that MS Dhoni hasn’t played his final IPL match yet and insists the BCCI should retain the impact player rule, which could enable the cricket legend to continue his IPL journey. Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings were knocked out of this IPL season after a 27-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore in a thrilling southern derby in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Chennai, the five-time champions, needed 17 runs in the final over to secure a playoff spot based on their net run rate. Despite Dhoni’s valiant six off Yash Dayal, the RCB bowler managed to hold his nerve, sealing the victory for his team.

During an interview on Star Sports Cricket Live, Rayudu expressed his optimism about Dhoni’s return.

I don’t think this is his last game. I can’t see him wanting to end on this note,

Rayudu said. Even as RCB celebrated, Dhoni shook hands with their players and staff before quietly retreating to the dressing room.

Rayudu noted Dhoni’s rare display of frustration, particularly after getting out, which he interpreted as a sign of Dhoni’s desire to finish on a high note.

You never know with MS Dhoni; he might come back next year,

Rayudu added. He emphasized the role of the BCCI in this context, urging them to maintain the impact player rule.

The impact player rule allows Dhoni to enter during crucial moments and make a significant impact. BCCI should keep this rule if they want to see Dhoni continue playing. The decision lies with them now,

Rayudu asserted. Despite the disappointing end for CSK, RCB’s victory marked their sixth consecutive win, propelling them from the bottom of the table to a playoff spot.

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden also commented on Dhoni’s future.

At the end of your career, you don’t want to see diminishing returns. As a leader, Dhoni is still ‘The Thala’ of CSK, aiming for first place. He’s using all his experience and cricket knowledge,

Hayden said.

Dhoni’s performance, scoring 25 off 13 balls with three fours and a massive six, demonstrated his enduring power and skill.

He’s always been able to hit at this stage of an innings, which is a rare talent,

Hayden added.

Dhoni’s determination and ability to send the ball flying even in the final overs highlight that he still has much to offer in top-flight cricket.
