Shami last represented India during the Champions Trophy, and despite consistent performances in domestic cricket, the selection panel, headed by Ajit Agarkar, has repeatedly overlooked him.
Shami recently claimed that there has been no communication with the selectors regarding his inclusion. However, a fresh report from the BCCI suggests that the truth may be more nuanced, indicating that Shami might not have shared the full story.
BCCI Official Responds
A senior BCCI official clarified that the management has been in regular contact with Shami. He revealed that the selectors had hoped to include him for the England tour, but Shami reportedly declined, citing the need to manage his workload before being considered for overseas duties.
“There have been multiple times that national selectors and support staff from the BCCI Centre of Excellence have called to check on Shami. The selection committee was desperate to get his services in England as Jasprit Bumrah could not have played more than three Tests. Who wouldn’t want a bowler of his calibre in English conditions?” the official told PTI.
The official added,
“So the narrative that there was no communication with Shami isn’t an absolute truth. The sports science team also has his medical reports and whether his body will be able to take the rigours of international cricket.”
Shami’s Domestic Form
Shami has been actively participating in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal, showcasing both fitness and skill. Across the first three matches of the season, he has bowled 93 overs and taken 15 wickets, including a match-winning five-wicket haul against Gujarat that secured a win for Bengal.
Despite proving his form and fitness, the 34-year-old seamer was snubbed for India’s Test squad against South Africa, leaving many fans questioning the decision.
