The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the Women’s Premier League (WPL) player retention deadline, giving franchises an additional three weeks to finalize their core squads. Originally set for October 15, the deadline is now moved to November 7, according to Cricbuzz. The extension provides teams with extra time to decide on players they wish to retain for the upcoming season.
Since its launch, the Women’s Premier League has seen tremendous success. Heading into its third season, scheduled for February next year, fans await official confirmation on dates and venues.
Additional Time for WPL Teams to Confirm Retentions
Ahead of the player auction, all five franchises—Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and UP Warriorz—must submit their list of retained players. Initially, October 15 was set as the submission deadline, but the BCCI has now given teams until November 7 to make their final decisions. Each team is allowed a squad of 18 players, including up to six overseas players, while the auction purse has been raised to INR 15 crore this season, up from INR 13.5 crore.
Rumors suggest that following this season, a mega-auction may occur, possibly introducing a sixth team to the competition.
