BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board will cover all travel and accommodation expenses for Sooryavanshi’s parents, citing the need to ensure the young cricketer’s comfort and smooth transition into the senior national setup.
Sooryavanshi earned his maiden India T20I call-up following a sensational IPL 2026 season, where he amassed 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30. His performances made him the tournament’s highest run-scorer, earning him the Orange Cap, along with the MVP and Emerging Player of the Season awards.
Saikia emphasized the uniqueness of having a player as young as Sooryavanshi in the senior team, noting that very few cricketers in modern times have entered international cricket at such an early age.
“You see, not all national teams at the senior level have a 14 or 15-year-old in their squad. After many decades, we have someone like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. At one point, it was Sachin Tendulkar who made it to the national team at such a young age,” Saikia said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
He added that the decision to allow parental support was aimed at helping the youngster adjust to an adult dressing room environment and reduce off-field pressures.
“When such a young kid is part of the senior team, there are obviously a lot of issues that can crop up. To make him comfortable and help him get used to an adult environment, we felt it would be helpful,” he said.
Sooryavanshi is currently in Sri Lanka representing India A in a 50-over tri-series involving Afghanistan A and Sri Lanka A. The young batter recently found himself at the centre of an on-field altercation during a match against Sri Lanka A, though no formal sanctions have been issued.
As the tri-series is being conducted under the jurisdiction of Sri Lanka Cricket, any disciplinary action falls under the host board and match officials rather than the BCCI or ICC.
Responding to speculation on social media about possible disciplinary action from the Indian board, Saikia dismissed the claims, stressing that the BCCI does not interfere in on-field decisions.
“A lot of things are going on in social media that BCCI is contemplating action, etc. Do you want the BCCI to step into the domain of the match referee? The BCCI is not an authority there,” he said.
He further clarified that match officials are responsible for handling such incidents.
“If anything goes wrong, the match referee and umpires will take a call. There is a system in place,” Saikia added.
