The historic result also marks Bangladesh’s second Test victory in a SENA country, following their memorable win over New Zealand in Mount Maunganui in 2022. It is also only the second time Bangladesh have defeated Australia in seven Test meetings, with their previous victory coming in the 2017 Mirpur Test.
The nine-wicket victory is Bangladesh’s second-biggest Test win by wickets, behind only their 10-wicket victory over Pakistan in Rawalpindi in 2024.
Bangladesh’s Remarkable Record in Australia
Bangladesh’s achievement stands out when compared with other Asian teams. Pakistan needed seven Tests to record their first Test win in Australia, while India took 12 attempts. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, are still waiting for their first Test victory in Australia after 15 attempts.
Bangladesh have now achieved the feat in just three Tests, underlining the significance of their historic triumph in Darwin.
Hasan Mahmud and Tanzid Hasan Lead the Way
Hasan Mahmud was the standout performer with the ball, producing a sensational 6/55 in Australia’s first innings. His spell helped restrict the hosts to 198, and he was subsequently named Player of the Match.
With the bat, Tanzid Hasan played a crucial role by scoring a brilliant 101 off 197 balls, helping Bangladesh post 426 and establish a commanding first-innings lead.
Bangladesh eventually chased down the target of 57 runs for the loss of just one wicket to complete a memorable nine-wicket victory.
The result has also boosted Bangladesh’s position in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27, with the Tigers sitting fourth with a 66.67% points percentage.
