Jonny Bairstow’s recent struggles with the bat in India have sparked criticism, with only 102 runs across three matches. Despite the scrutiny, coach Brendon McCullum emphasized the importance of supporting the player, affirming that dropping him from the lineup for the upcoming fourth Test in Ranchi is not on the agenda.

Bairstow’s performance in the series has been lackluster, with his highest score being 37 in the opener at Hyderabad. In the third Test in Rajkot, amidst England’s massive 434-run defeat, he managed just four runs and suffered a duck in his first innings, marking his eighth duck against India in Test cricket.

Former England captain Alastair Cook suggested dropping Bairstow from the team due to his struggles, but McCullum is resolute in his commitment to helping the player regain his form.

When asked about Bairstow’s participation in his 99th Test appearance in Ranchi, McCullum responded to reporters,

I haven’t assessed the wicket yet. However, I anticipate Jonny will be playing XI.

While acknowledging Bairstow’s underperformance, McCullum stressed the need to provide him with support and patience. He emphasized Bairstow’s past contributions to the team and expressed confidence in his ability to bounce back.

I recognize the challenges Jonny has faced in this series. Nonetheless, his track record and impact for us cannot be overlooked. We need to maintain faith in him, shield him from external pressures, and keep him focused on his objectives. I believe Jonny will overcome this rough patch,

McCullum remarked.

With India leading the five-match series 2-1, all eyes are on the fourth Test set to commence on Friday.
