Babar, who arrived in Australia with high expectations, managed just 202 runs across 11 innings at a strike rate of 103. The Sixers confirmed his departure, stating, “Babar Azam has been recalled to join Pakistan’s national camp ahead of upcoming international fixtures. He will be unavailable for the remainder of the BBL|15 Finals Series.”
Former Australia batter Mark Waugh had previously questioned Babar’s place in the top order during the tournament. “I think a bit of tough love is needed. At the moment, they’re almost totally relying on Steve Smith… Unfortunately, I’m going to have to drop Babar Azam. I don’t think he’s done enough at the top of the order. You can either have Moises Henriques open or bring in Daniel Hughes or Jordan Silk,” Waugh said.
In contrast, Sixers captain Steven Smith has been in sensational form, scoring 220 runs in just four matches. However, the opening partnership with Babar struggled at times, including a notable incident where Smith retained strike, frustrating the Pakistani batter.
The Sydney Sixers will now face the Hobart Hurricanes in the Challenger match, with the winner advancing to meet the Perth Scorchers in the BBL final.
