India youngster Ayush Badoni has received his first call-up to the national team for the third ODI against New Zealand after Washington Sundar was ruled out of the series. Speaking to BCCI TV ahead of the series decider in Indore, Badoni shared his emotions and the journey that earned him this opportunity.
Badoni revealed that he first learned about his potential India call-up while captaining Delhi in the quarterfinal against Vidarbha. “I was with the Delhi team and informed my roommate Priyansh that I might be leaving, which meant he could take over as captain. It was a great feeling, and I’m very grateful and happy to get this opportunity,” he said.
The official call came late at night, and Badoni shared the news with family and friends the next morning. “When I joined the Indian camp, all the coaches and players were very welcoming. I’ve played with and against most of them before, so it was nice to meet everyone again,” he added.
Working Hard to Earn the Call-Up
Badoni emphasized the importance of working on his all-round skills to get noticed at the highest level. “Earlier, I focused more on batting, but over the last two years, I’ve worked a lot on my bowling. I feel I can contribute with the ball, which has helped me develop as an all-rounder. Bowling for Delhi and picking up wickets has benefited the team and me,” he said.
Respect for Seniors and Bonds in the Team
Speaking about his senior teammates, Badoni expressed excitement about sharing the dressing room with legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He also highlighted his strong bonds with Arshdeep Singh and Shreyas Iyer, who he has played alongside for Delhi. “I try to learn from the seniors whenever they bat or bowl. It improves my game. Being around teammates I share a bond with makes the environment even better,” he added.
With Washington Sundar ruled out, Badoni is now a strong contender to make his debut in the third ODI on January 18 at Indore, which will decide the series.
