In a landmark announcement, the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will host a special one-off Test match between Australia and England on March 2027 to commemorate 150 years of Test cricket. The match will see arch-rivals renew their storied rivalry in what promises to be a pinnacle event in the sport’s most traditional format.
Earlier today, Cricket Australia, along with state governments, confirmed that Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide will retain hosting rights for their annual Test matches over the next seven years.
MCG to Host Landmark Test in 2027:
The MCG is set to continue its tradition of hosting Boxing Day Tests, in addition to this significant anniversary match in 2027. Meanwhile, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) will hold the New Year’s Tests until at least 2031.
Adelaide Oval, known for its stunning backdrop, will host the Christmas Tests, which could be played in either the traditional Day format or the more modern Day-Night format. For the upcoming 2025-26 Ashes series, Adelaide is expected to host a red-ball Test.
Additionally, the Optus Stadium in Perth has been designated as the venue for all Tests in Western Australia over the next three years. Notably, the 2025-26 Ashes series will see the first Ashes Test being held at a venue other than the Gabba in 40 years.
Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley expressed his enthusiasm for these long-term agreements, stating,
We are thrilled to secure hosting rights that ensure these iconic venues will continue to deliver world-class cricket over the next seven years. We deeply appreciate the support from state and territory governments, as well as venue operators, who play a crucial role in creating unforgettable experiences and maximizing the economic benefits of these major events.
It’s important to note that the one-off Test at the MCG in 2027 was not part of the Ashes series. Instead, it serves as a tribute to the 1977 Centenary Test, where Australia claimed a memorable victory at this iconic ground.
